Android Tablet Web Traffic Still No Match for iPad

Operating System Share Trend

Despite the popularity of Amazon’s Kindle Fire this holiday season, Android tablets are still far from matching the iPad’s web traffic usage share.
According to a report from web and mobile analytics company NetApplications, while the Android tablets, including the Kindle Fire and the Samsung Galaxy Tab have gained a slight amount of mobile Internet share, the two are still trailing behind the iPad.
All of Samsung’s Galaxy Tabs combined have 0.42 percent of mobile Internet share, while the Kindle Fire has just 0.34 percent, despite the fact that Amazon has sold approximately six million units since the tablet’s November release.
Although the iPad’s Internet share numbers have dropped from December, iPad users are still responsible for 24 percent of the total mobile Internet usage.
Apple’s iPhone holds the lion’s share of mobile Internet usage, with 27 percent of web traffic coming from iPhone users. In comparison, Android 2.2 and 2.3 make up 14 percent of mobile Internet usage when combined. Java ME has a 19 percent share Symbian has a 4.4 percent share, and BlackBerry is in the rear with 2.6 percent.
Mobile/Tablet Operating System Market Share

Unsurprisingly, 55 percent of mobile Internet users are rocking Safari, with Opera Mini coming in second at 20 percent and the Android Browser coming in third with 18 percent. And if you were wondering, 92 percent of mobile users globally use Google as a search engine.
Google may be the most popular search engine, but that doesn’t seem to attract people to the Internet on their Android devices. This data indicates that iPhone and iPad users are still using the Internet a lot more than their Android counterparts, and it appears that most Android tablet users prefer to use their tablets for offline content and non-web apps rather than web browsing.
Amazon made a lot of noise over it’s ultra fast Silk web browser, but that turned out better in theory than practice. There have been complaints that the browser is slow-loading and clunky, and this Internet usage data seems to support those grievances.
