Game company Square Enix shuts fan site after hack

Japanese game developer Square Enix said Thursday that a server for a fan site with information on 1.8 million users had been hacked, but it was unclear if any of the data had been stolen.
The company said it noticed that unknown parties had accessed the server for its free “Square Enix Members” site on Tuesday afternoon, and decided to shut down the service the same day. Users register on the server with their email addresses and sometimes their names, addresses and phone numbers, but the server holds no credit card information, a spokesman said.
The affected server holds data on a million users from Japan and 800,000 from the U.S., he said. The site was still down Thursday as an investigation into the hacking continued, but there was no sign that any data had been stolen.
In May, Square Enix said it suffered hacking attacks into the web site of a Canadian subsidiary and two product sites. It said 350 applicants' resumes and up to 25,000 email addresses were stolen in that attack.
In addition to its console games, Square Enix also sells iPhone and iPad games in Apple’s App Store, including Chrono Trigger, Chaos Rings, and assorted Final Fantasy titles.
