Superbowl Ads: Apple Setting the Stage

Super Bowl XLVIThey say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, so the iPad should be extra flattered with the news filtering down on what this year’s Super Bowl XLVI ads may look like. Long-touted as the most impressive (and expensive) television commercials of the year, it may also be safe to say that in this day and age they are some of the only spots that are actually watched (instead of skipped thanks to the likes of TiVo and other PVRs).
One of the biggest names out there is pulling together their commercial with cues taken from Apple: skip the usual pomp and circumstance, avoid the predictable celebrity stunts and hit home with something a little different.
To this end, Best Buy will be featuring Silicon Valley innovators and inventors such as Kevin Systrom from InstaGram and camera phone pioneer Philippe Kahn in their top-spot ad during Sunday’s big game. This new style of advertising marks a real departure from past ads seen from the major retailer that featured the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Justin Bieber. Drew Panayiotou, Best Buy’s Marketing Chief, explained their decision:
“Big brands like to hire celebrities. We looked at everyone from George Clooney to Stephen Colbert. We believe the inventors are more than enough. I give those 125 million viewers a lot of credit. I think they’ll appreciate the story. [...] They may not be at the same level as Steve Jobs, but they created some amazing stuff.”
This stylistic hat tip to Apple as emulated by Best Buy will go unnoticed by most but may actually prove to set their ad apart by being the one with the geeks instead of the “big-budget celebrity spokes-models”.
Apple itself now abstains from advertising during the Superbowl, but this lead isn’t going to be taken by Samsung that intends to parade their 5.3-inch Galaxy Note during a spot in this year’s spectacle.
Are there any ads in particular that you are looking forward to?
