Superbowl is Going Online, and on iOS
Do you like this story?
Now however, it would seem that we may be huddling around our smartphones rather than the big screen. The NFL and broadcasters have been wary of making the move to the online realm for a couple of reasons, number one being the controversial (really?) topic of money.
The internet has had the NFL running scared from streaming their games for some time now, but it seems like someone finally knocked some sense into the stubborn management and told them that ads on mobile platforms make money too. Ok, maybe not $100,000 per second money (cost of Superbowl commercials), but it is certainly past time that we were able to watch our teams online.
Now that I’ve got you all excited, I have to apologize for this next part. While the Superbowl will be streamed live and free online, it will require a Verizon network to stream on your iPhone or iPad. Don’t shoot the messenger! The app is after all, the Verizon NFL Mobile app.
The app will offer support for both iPhone and iPad, and will feature multiple camera angles, replays, live stats, and of course everyone’s favorite: replays of the commercials. The vice president of media strategy, Hans Schroeder (No way! Boardwalk Empire anyone?!), had this to say:
“Whether it’s just for a quarter if somebody has to run out to the store to get something they forgot, now they can stay connected to the game. With such a big television audience, it will be interesting to see the expanded reach.”
This will be the first step towards what will hopefully develop into a more enthusiastic and less stone-age NFL administrative team. The NFL also plans on streaming the ProBowl through its own and NBC’s websites, as well as the app. I’ll leave you with this: Go Chargers!
