So Long Dell Streak 7 Tablet

Dell Streak
And another one bites the dust. Dell announced today that they were no longer selling their Streak 7 tablet, which is likely not as much of a surprise as they would have hoped. Some of us had guessed this was coming, with the Streak 5 being axed a few months ago and many reported instances of Dell referring to the Streak 7 in the past tense even before today.
Dell insisted that they still intend to be a part of the mobility market, which may be a little more true in other parts of the world. While they do still sell smartphones (for the moment) in North America, there are no current Android tablet offerings. But this is not true everywhere, with places like China actually seeing a 10″ version of the product dubbed the Streak 10 Pro.
There was a time when Dell should have dominated a market like this, but that just isn’t the case anymore. Some speculation says that it is because the company announces products long before they are ready to ship and consumers lose interest before they can actually own one. If you ask me, I’d never think to order something like this from Dell because things like this always seem like the ‘what the heck’ add-on to a purchase you are already making through them. (and given the terrible customer service I have received with nearly all of my purchases, chances are good you won’t find me back on their site making another one anytime soon)
Regardless, it seems like Dell is putting stock in Windows 8 and gearing up for that launch next year (though when next year is still to be determined). It’s a big gamble, but given how lovingly the world isn’t embracing Windows-based devices right now, if the new OS is a smash hit then Dell will be ready when so many others aren’t.
