BBC Arrives in Canada, is the US Next?
Do you like this story?
We’ve been following the BBC Global iPlayer‘s march around the world. After its release across Europe last July, the player debuted in Australia in September. Most recently the video-on-demand app, which allows users to subscribe to a broad range a current and classic roster of the British broadcaster’s programs launched in Canada.
Canadian subscribers will pay either $8.99 per month or $84.99 annually to access the Global iPlayer.
How long will US residents have to wait to access an endless supply of Britcoms on their favorite device? Hopefully, not too much longer. The US release of Global iPlayer should be available soon, as the US is expected to be included in the rollout of the pilot phase during the app’s first year.
The Global iPlayer differs from its UK version, which only allows users to catch up on the last seven days of TV and radio content, while the global player will include content stretching as far back as 60 years ago.
The Canadian version of the player will alter its content to suit audiences’ tastes in that country and to comply with any rights restrictions.
At present the Canadian iPlayer is on track to air classic comedies such as Blackadder and Fawlty Towers as well as the more recent crime drama MI-5.
