Get Dino-Serious with Jurassic Park – iPad Game Review

Jurassic Park: The Game 1 HDIf you needed proof that the iPad 2 can be a serious gaming device, Jurassic Park: The Game 1 HD is the app that will convince you. Telltale Inc has created a game that picks up in the second half of the first Jurassic Park movie once the security systems have failed and the dinosaurs are roaming free!
From the moment you load this app your mind will be blown. When the developers refer to it as a cinematic experience, that is no exaggeration!
It is hard to do this app justice with a review without giving away too many spoilers, but I will say that the interface is pretty spectacular. Credits roll as you begin the first scene, just as they do for the movies, and the adventure is launched with an animated introduction that features a full tutorial on how to use the app and interface. Simple fingertip gestures allow you to rotate your view of the landscapes, examine objects and affect your environment.
Long load times are met with rewarding graphics, so try to be patient. If you are running iOS 5, give the Airplay mirroring feature a try and really enjoy the full experience that this app can offer!
Note: Unfortunately for those of you with a first generation iPad, this app will only run on an iPad 2.

What I liked: Usually you will find that I am delighted when I can play a game with the sound turned off but in this case the sound-effects really add a much-needed and enjoyable dimension to the game. They are a little spooky though and I even found myself holding my breath on one or two occasions!
What I didn’t like: The developers recommend that you close all apps and reboot your device before you play this game. While I appreciate that isn’t a requirement and demonstrate the sophistication of the game itself, I think that it is impractical and frustrating to have an app that may not run correctly otherwise. I would like to see other compromises made so that the game is ‘nearly as good’ but doesn’t require a reboot. With that said and to be fair, I never once rebooted my iPad 2 before playing it and didn’t experience a problem.
To buy or not to buy: If you loved the Jurassic Park movies, it is pretty much criminal if you don’t already own this app.
