Build a Criminal Empire in Crime City HD

Crime City HD, from publisher Funzio, is a massively multiplayer online crime game, where players can fight and rob other players to build up a thriving criminal empire of hotels, casinos, restaurants, and more.
I didn’t play Mafia Wars on Facebook, but it looks like Crime City HD is a very similar game. Want to find out what it’s like to live a virtual life of crime? This free iPad game is the perfect opportunity.
When starting the game, I was prompted to choose an avatar. I chose the female avatar and was given a scantily-clad woman in a bikini, whom I promptly dressed in a more sensible outfit. I was immediately prompted to jump right into the thick of things and rob a mini mart, which rewarded me with $24, while costing 12 energy.
After robbing the mini mart, I beat up an unsuspecting man, raising myself to level two. I was given skill points to increase my stats, which I spent increasing my attack and my energy level so that I could partake in more beatings.
Energy controls how much my avatar is able to do in a day, and when that bar gets to zero, it’s time to go home and nap. I engaged in several more brutal fights, employing both my hammer and my Walther PPK. Don’t worry, there’s no blood and guts, but all the same, this is a violent game that I’d be hesitant to allow youngsters to play.

With my ill-gained earnings, I was able to construct buildings in my own neighborhood, which will provide me with rent each month. I built a shady looking laundromat. After that I was thrust back in to the big, bad world with the option of being one of three things: An enforcer, an agent, or a tycoon. I chose agent, which boosted my energy recovery.
From there, I had a list of goals to complete, such as keeping the streets safe with my skillfully wielded hammer, defeating other criminals, and decorating my own neighborhood. I engaged in a ruthless spree of attacks and robberies, racking up cash and weapons until I ran out of stamina.

Running out of stamina means a time out until that bar refills. Of course, you can use in-app purchases for refills as well, if you just can’t wait. A bag of 50 gold, good for 5 refills, will cost $4.99, which is, well, robbery if you ask me.
Besides that, this is a fun game to check in and play every couple of hours when your stamina and energy have refilled.
What I liked: This game can be enjoyed without in-app purchases to progress, and the game allows players to live out all their latent thug life fantasies.
What I didn’t like: This game is built around having a group of online friends to play with (in your mafia) and many people result to inviting random internet strangers, something that I’d be concerned with if I had a child or teenager playing this game. That emphasis on needing friends to play is something that will prevent me from continuing to play this game. Additionally, all the fun stuff, such as new weapons and outfit choices will end up costing real money.
To buy or not to buy: Crime City HD is free to play and worth the download if you’ve liked similar games like Mafia Wars.
