Apple TV to Control 32% of Set-Top TV Market
Do you like this story?
Historically, sales of the Apple TV have paled in comparison to the numbers of other Apple products, but within the Internet-ready TV set-top market, the Apple TV is successful. According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Apple is poised to take a 32 percent share of the market in 2011.
The second version of the Apple TV came in at a lower price, which helped to accelerate sales of the device. The same strategy worked for Roku, and overall, sales of set-top boxes have increased to 12 million units overall in 2011. Only 8 percent of US households own a connected TV player, but 32 percent of those use an Apple TV.
Those who own Apple TV’s are more likely to spend money on movies and television shows than consumers who own other products. 30 percent of Apple TV owners pay for rentals, compared to 20 percent for the rest of the market. Apple TV’s limited file format and usability – restricted to iTunes, Netflix, and YouTube – may be the reason that users are forced to purchase content from iTunes.
Strategy Analytics analyst Jia Wu believes that Apple is the company to beat when it comes to connected set-top boxes. “Apple is leading this nascent market, which it still considers a ‘hobby.’ As Apple prepares for its expected launch of smart TVs in 2012, rival platforms must accelerate their development plans to keep Apple from running away with the connected TV business, as it has done in smartphones and digital music.”
Apple TV may be a hobby for the company at this point, but with rumors of a full scale Apple TV coming in the next year or two, Apple is set to become a major player in the television industry. Rumors of an Apple branded television set came about with the release of Steve Jobs’ biography, which revealed that he wanted to revolutionize the television set, as he did for so many other products. Apple’s upcoming television set is rumored to have many of the aspects of the current Apple TV set-top box, like iTunes access and Airplay. It is also rumored to support iCloud and Siri integration for advanced voice controls.
