Koto Go Silence Offers Innovative Animation That Kids Will Love – iPad App Review

Koto Go Silence shares the adventures of Koto of a tenacious dog who hears things that go bump in the night, and decides to do something about it.
This universal children’s book app alternates between text-based screens and computer-generated animated sections.
The animated sequences allow the reader a chance to get to know Koto, who is dressed as a Samurai. Both curious and willing to persevere, even in touch situations, this little dog is a distinctive character. Koto’s expressions convey a lot of emotion. He frequently grins at the reader after he accomplishes a task.

It’s necessary to tap on the text sections to trigger the app’s narration. The story repeats the idea that Koto will go to different parts of the house until he succeeds in quieting all the noises and can finally get some well-deserved sleep.
There aren’t any settings that users can or need to adjust in order to use the app. Interestingly, if the user taps through the text sequences using the arrows in the lower right and left corners the app skips the animated sections completely.
Koto Go Silence is available to download from the App Store for $2.99.

What I liked: The animated sections of Koto Go Silence impressed and entertained me. Koto looks adorable in his makeshift Samurai outfit.
What I didn’t like: The text sections of the book were not as original as the animated sections. The language was stilted at times. Much of the language rhymes, and the prose has a rhythm that is similar to but not nearly as well-crafted as Dr. Seuss.
To buy or not to buy: Koto Go Silence will appeal to children who respond to the app’s amazing animation and are not troubled by the weaknesses in the story. Although there is nothing intentionally scary about the app, it does mention many night time sounds that a child could hear as a means to put off going to bed. Any parent whose children might be particularly susceptible to these suggestions may want to skip this story, or be sure not to read it at bed time.
