Time of Heroes Arrives in the App Store – Prepare for Battle

Time of Heroes is a 3D-turn based strategy game with impressive graphics and a fairly unique combat system that strategy-game veterans are sure to enjoy.
This game has an atypical combat system compared to other strategy games. When starting a level, you are prompted to choose heroes to lead your troops. Each hero can command a set number of troops, which you are also able to hand select, and you can choose a bonus that your hero will be able to bestow on troops while in combat.
The combat system is actually pretty complicated, and I didn’t think the in-game tutorial gave enough information. When the battle starts, you choose where to place your heroes and troops, compared to where the enemy is on the map. From there, combat begins, and you can move your troops and prepare to attack.
You move your troops and heroes one by one, which is an overly tedious and slow process, making this game rather unexciting. Troops can move forward or attack during a turn, and the first portion of turns will be spent repetitively tapping to move your troops forward. You will need to make sure you’ve got enough firepower before attacking a more difficult enemy, and you have to keep your hero safe – if he dies, it takes out all of the soldiers following him.

After you move your troops, you have to wait for the enemy to move their troops, also one by one, another process that takes quite some time. When both you and the enemy are in range of one another, hitting the attack button will send the men in range to attack the enemy, a process which you will have no control over, so hopefully your men were placed in good positions.
There’s quite a bit of depth to the tactics in Time of Heroes. There are terrain bonuses and weaknesses when attacking, aura influences, and a random element to the enemy. This can make for some complicated and difficult battles, especially if you’re inexperienced with strategy games. This is definitely a game that will take some time to master. Luckily, there are several different difficulty levels, which will keep this playable for gamers of all skill levels.
The gameplay is in Time of Heroes is fairly well done if you can get past all of the tapping, but I’m hoping some updates will make it easier to understand what’s going on and alleviate some of the tediousness of the micromanagement. Moving and attacking should both be simpler processes, and a one-tap enemy attack might be the ticket here. With some polish, this has the potential to be a great game.
What I liked: This game has great graphics, and the sound effects and music were also well done. There’s are several different heroes and unit types, which do keep the game interesting, and there’s approximately ten hours of gameplay for the price.

What I didn’t like: The controls just weren’t great. It was hard to target enemies and units alike, even zoomed in. There are a significant number of in-app purchases, and though the developer says that they aren’t required for the game, it feels like some of that content should be included in the purchase of a $2.99 game.

To buy or not to buy: This game was not for me, but if you’re a fan of turn-based strategy games and don’t mind the long waits, you may enjoy this one. It does have decent graphics and when you’ve become accustomed to the controls, the challenging gameplay is fun.
