RIM’s New Strategy – Hope iOS and Android Screw Up!

Thorsten HeinsI am not so sure that this is the time that I’d like to become the new CEO for RIM, but Thorsten Heins was up to the job having been appointed last week to lead the struggling tech firm. Not that he was a choice from out of nowhere, Heins has been functioning as one of two Chief Operating Officers for the last few years and was in charge of hardware and software product engineering.
Unfortunately, it appears that RIM’s new strategy isn’t to innovate but rather to wait for the actual innovators to fail.
In a recent interview, Heins was quick to say that he has heard negative reviews of iOS and Android devices (which to begin with is a rather vague statement given the array of options, particularly with Android). But his real defense was that he feels those other devices have security flaws and that, “when the first big security flaw even happens in one of the large enterprises, you will see this turn around. Wait for the day this happens.” Classy move Mr. Heins.
And then what? Let’s pretend for a moment that the security thing is a real possibility and that one of Android or Apple devices will falter so badly that entire corporations would have to abandon their use of those devices (and could afford to spend the money in the hardware, training and implementation required to make a change like that), it would seem that the likelihood is not that they would make a sizable investment into RIM. Android users would move to Apple, Apple users to Android. And after all, Windows has been plagued with security issues for the last decade, and this has not prompted enterprises to move to OS X or Linux in a significant way.
I suppose that Heins has nothing else to say right now given that RIM has put all their eggs in the operating system upgrade basket and the hardware. Those changes aren’t due to hit the market until late 2012 (if there are no further delays).
