I Sure Hope they Wash their Hands!

Whether you admit to it in mixed company or not, chances are good you are one of them (us). In their IT in the Toilet study, 11Mark surveyed 1,000 Americans in an effort to discover just how connected we really are.

The cold hard facts state that 75% of Americans surveyed with a mobile phone admit to having used it in the bathroom. Beyond that 30% of men vs. 20% of women indicated that they “don’t go to the bathroom without [their] mobile phone.” Age isn’t a defense in this one either, old and young alike are guilty of this one.

A lot of the statistics in this report didn’t surprise me. I knew people would be “apping on the throne”. What surprised (and kind of horrified) me was the realization that as many as 75% of respondents had answered a call while indisposed and even worse, as many as 48% had initiated(!!) one. Other activities were also popular, with a growing number of users even shopping and making purchases –talk about multitasking!

A few other gems:

While Android devices did top the list of those preferred by bathroom-goers, there was very little difference between the actual numbers of Android, BlackBerry and iPhones seeing the “dark of day”.
Do you have children? Looks like grabbing a little bathroom-related alone time (with your phone in hand) is very common.
While 92% of people claim they washed their hands after they were finished, only 14% said they also washed their phones (whatever that means). This should likely make you think twice before ever borrowing a friend’s phone again.

All kidding aside, this level of connectedness may be a wonderful thing or a sign of something that is actually kind of sad. You should feel free to take a few moments to visit the bathroom without worrying that you might miss something. I promise, the Angry Birds will still be Angry when you are finished.
