Google Doodle marks 112th birth anniversary of the Wan brothers

                                    Screenshot of Google Doodle

Yesterday(Jan 17, 2012) is the 112th anniversary of the birth of the late Wan brothers, Wan Laiming and Wan Guchan, the pioneers of Chinese animation industry. A special Doodle has been prepared by Google, on the home page of which images like Sun Wukong (Monkey King), flat peach, hotwheel, and golden cudgel have been featured.
The image of Sun Wukong comes from the animated film Uproar in Heaven, which is an
animated feature film made by Shanghai Animation Film Studio from 1961 to 1964. As
a classic Chinese animated film, Uproar in Heaven is truly a milestone in Chinese
animation industry, having exerted its influences over generations since its coming into
being.
Wan Laiming and Wan Guchan were twin brothers. They were the first ones to experiment with primitive film technology adapted from the United States and other parts of the world, and were often inspired by foreign cartoons that made it to Shanghai.
In 1919 the Wan brothers worked in the fine art departments at Shanghai Commercial Press. They were exposed to early technologies like zoetrope with galloping horses that animate on rotation. Other cinema techniques like zoetrope projection principles were being studied.
