Get Creative With Feed the Monster – iPad App Review

Feed the Monster is a creative and colorful monster creation game for iOS. Originally designed solely for the iPhone and iPod touch, a version of Feed the Monster that runs natively on the iPad was recently released by developer Huminah Huminah.
The point of the game is simple: join the feeding frenzy and feed the monster until he explodes into mini-monsters. Then collect the 5 little monsters into the “merging machine” to create a new monster.

The new monster can now be customized by the player. The game includes five basic monsters, with names like Chomp and Spike, to get things started. Players can choose a body, eyes, arms, horns, legs, and a mouth. It’s possible to change the color of the monster too. The different combinations are endless! Players can save up to 5 monsters.
There are also two additional minigames, Food Catch and Food Fight that the player can choose from the main menu. In Feed the Monster, the player has to catch food that drops from the ceiling, jump over rolling pins, and avoid foods like pepper and bananas that can slow the monster down. It’s harder than it looks. Food Fight pits one monster against another in a battle to see who can be the first to bean the other 5 times with virtual victuals.
The monsters also respond to taps from the user, as well as reacting by sneezing or burping when they eat different foods.
Download Feed the Monster for iPad for free from the App Store through January 27, 2012, after which time the game will cost $2.99.
What I liked: The monsters were cute! Feed the Monster taps into a child’s desire to play as well as to create.

What I didn’t like: The controls weren’t very responsive, particularly when playing Food Catch. Although it didn’t really seem to matter since there is no penalty for playing the game wrong. In the monster creation section some of the arms and legs were nearly identical, which meant there was actually not too much the player could to with those parts.

To buy or not to buy: Feed the Monster for iPad will appeal to young gamers. Children will enjoy choosing their own minigames and customizing monsters while parents will appreciate that the pace of the game isn’t overstimulating. Feed the Monster is, fairly simplistic and is likely to keep kids busy for short periods of time, which might appeal to parents looking for ways to limit screen time.
