Dropbox Automator – A Great Way to Extend DropBox Functionality

Like many people, I use Dropbox on a daily basis, multiple times per day. With an iPad, and iPhone, and two laptops, it’s one application that I can’t live without.
Now our Dropbox accounts can do more than just store our files – with the Dropbox Automator, you can choose folders and have actions performed on those files whenever they are added to those folders.
For example, you can upload a picture to a specific folder and have Dropbox Automator automatically upload that picture to Flickr or Facebook, which is an amazing feature for those of us who are constantly uploading photos (of course, you can use it for many other file types as well and perform all kinds of functions).
I have never been able to upload from Aperture to Flickr in a way that is convenient and easy (since I don’t want to sync my entire library), and now Dropbox Automator is able to save me a few steps. To enable Flickr/Dropbox functionality, I had to log in to the Dropbox Automator website and authorize it to use both my Flickr account and my Dropbox account.
When uploading a photo to Flickr or Facebook, you can add tags and descriptions, which is useful for a batch upload. I made a folder that would automatically upload my photos to Flickr, but folders are not limited to a single action. You can add multiples, and have all kinds of useful things done automatically.
Here’s a list of functions:
  • Documents – Convert to PDF, Summarize, Translate, PDF to TXT, Upload to Google Docs, Upload to Slideshare, Sign PDF
  • Pictures – Upload to Facebook, Upload to Flickr, Downscale, Rotate image, Write text on image, Photo effect, Stamp logo, Stamp map
  • Any file – e-mail, Zip file, Save to another folder, Rename, Upload to FTP, Encrypt, Decrypt
  • Info – Tweet, Set Facebook Status
After connecting Dropbox Automator to Dropbox and Flickr, every photo I put in my Dropbox Flickr folder is supposed to be uploaded to Flickr, but there may still be a bug or two with the system because it took quite a long time for my photo to be uploaded, and two of my photos never made it. I did have much better luck using the other photo features like rotate and add effect, so there’s a lot of promise for this service.
Dropbox Automator was created by WappWolf, a company that has a website for batch uploading and editing documents and photos. Dropbox Automator works in the same way, except it keeps an eye on your specified folders to allow for continually uploading and editing of data anytime you add a document or photo to your specified Dropbox folders.
I’m hoping that there are some improvements to the service in the future, because it has a lot of potential. Want to try it out? Head on over to the Dropbox Automator website to get started. It’s completely free, and pretty awesome, so I’d suggest giving it a look.
