Big Nate: Comix By U! HD Lets Tweens Get Creative – iPad App Review

Night & Day Studios made its name with apps aimed squarely at the under-5 set with the release of book apps such as Ed Emberly’s Go Away, Big Green Monster (Pad Gadget = 4.5 stars). With their latest app, Big Nate: Comix By U! HD, the developer takes a stab at attracting the tween market.
Big Nate, the “self-described genius and king of detention,” was created by Lincoln Peirce. Nate gained fans through his gocomics strip, Poptropica island, as well as a slew of Wimpy Kid-style books that appeal to even the most reluctant reader. In Big Nate: Comix by U!, users take control of the storyline, and design, save, and share comics of their own.

Big Nate: Comix By U! broadens the reach of the Big Nate brand, but it isn’t just a ploy by marketers to create yet another item that kids “have to have.” The app allows the user to generate content, rather than just being a passive participant, which sets it apart from most of the other apps aimed at the tween market.
Nate is also a budding comic strip artist, so Comix by U! gives Nate fans a chance to partake in one of his favorite activities.

The app offers three levels of participation, which is reminiscent of Mo Willems’ Don’t Let the Pigeon Run This App (PadGadget= 5 stars). Users can choose from story starters, fill in the blanks, or decide to work from scratch. The story starters begin the comic with both graphic and text elements, while the fill in the blanks require the user to add text, although it is possible to edit these templates as well.
While users can add a large amount of detail when creating a strip, getting started is easy and intuitive. The user needs only to drag and drop comic elements into the various frames. Adding text was just as easy. The app comes with a help screen that is accessible at any point by tapping the question mark icon in the upper left.
Users can save their comic masterpieces in the “Your Gallery” section and email completed comics to friends.
Download Big Nate: Comix by U! HD from the App Store for $4.99. It’s not a universal app. The iPhone/iPod Touch version is available for $3.99.
What I liked: Big Nate: Comix By U! HD is a welcome respite from passive iOS games. The app was designed to accommodate various levels of skill, which broadens its appeal.
What I didn’t like: Users on iTunes report that the app crashes frequently, and I experienced this problem as well; however the developer already has plans to address this issue in an update. I would have preferred the app to be universal, rather than having to purchase it twice in order to access it on an iPhone or iPod touch.
To buy or not to buy: Big Nate fans will probably spend a lot more time using this app than they will zipping through the next hardcover comics collection, which makes it a bargain for parents. Big Nate: Comix by U! HD is a worthy addition to Big Nate’s oeuvre.
