Apple’s iPad Celebrates its Second Birthday – A Look Back

Happy Birthday, dear iPad! Today marks the anniversary of the day that former Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the original iPad at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California.
When news of the iPad first surfaced, it was met with some derision. “An oversized iPhone?” we all said. Who would possibly want one of those? Before we knew its name, we speculated on what Apple would call the upcoming tablet. The Macbook Touch? The iTablet? The iSlate? The iTab? The iGuide?
iSlate was the favored name, bandied about by many iPad news sites. Apple did register the name iSlate.com, so our beloved tablets could very well have been iSlates instead of iPads. When the final name did come out, it wasn’t loved by all. There were countless references to feminine hygiene products, and many felt it was too similar to “iPod.”
I was among the many who did not see the point of a giant iPhone when the iPad was announced. “I’ll never own one of those,” I declared. I thought it was a bad idea. By the time April 3rd rolled around, and the iPad was released, I’d changed my tune. And, obviously, so had many others, as the iPad quickly sold out.
Why did it sell out so quickly? Well, for one thing, it was aggressively priced. Many people had thought that Apple’s tablet would cost upwards of $900, more in line with Apple’s line of Macbooks rather than it’s iPhone and iPod Touch. That was not the case, and $499 turned out to be far more affordable than what Apple fans were expecting.
The low cost of the iPad had a huge impact on the tablet market, essentially shutting out all competition for the following two years. We still haven’t seen a tablet that is able to compete with the iPad at a lower price, which is why Apple’s tablet is still the reigning king of the mobile market.
Conveniently, I have a birthday on April 17th, and my gift that year was an iPad pre-order. I had my very own tablet less than a week later, and I quickly wondered how I had ever lived without it. I, like many others, was simply blown away by the array of apps and the quick, smooth interface.
Since its debut, Apple’s iPad has become Apple’s second largest revenue generator, with more than 55 million units sold in the last two years. As the iPad caught on like wildfire, developers were in a hurry to get games out on the red hot tablet. As a result, there are now 170,000 iPad apps out of the 500,000 total apps in the App Store.
In just a few months, we’ll be seeing the third iteration of the iPad, which, by all reports, is going to revolutionize the tablet market once again. The iPad 3 is rumored to be sporting a high resolution Retina display, a quad-core graphics processor, upgraded RAM, a more powerful battery, and improved cameras, which will, once more, put it way ahead of the competition.
It’s amazing how one little device can take the world by storm, isn’t it? Make sure to have a special cupcake or snack today in honor of your favorite tablet (hey, it’s a good excuse to have a little treat). Happy 2nd, iPad!
