So Ouat Kicks Off The New Year With A New Name And New Interactive Book: Robin Hood

This year, children’s book app developers So Ouat changed their name to Chocolapps and made a resolution to release one app per month for 2012. With lofty goals like these, it is no wonder the company has created such fantastic interactive books for kids to learn from. The Adventures of Robin Hood is the first book for 2012 and it hits the ground running.

Based on the classic tale of Robin Hood, this book takes children on an adventure of love, greed and triumph over evil.

Each page is full of interactive images and educational text. It will engage your young readers for hours while teaching them about vowels, word definitions, and even a new language.

Available in six different languages, the read-to-me feature lets readers hear the way words are pronounced as the story unfolds. By pausing the narration, one can interact with the text by tapping one of the teaching tools at the bottom of the page. For example, the “Explain to Me” tool shows a definition for a particular word. The “Show Me” feature uses images instead.

Readers can tap on each word individually to hear its pronunciation. This can be especially helpful in learning a new language. The words can also be displayed as either standard or cursive writing, which is a great learning tool for kids working on their handwriting skills.

When reading the book in the auto play feature, it is almost as if you are watching a movie. Each image moves alongside the storyline and creates an engaging visual to compliment the text. When auto play is paused, kids can tap on the images to see what will happen next. Some pages offer games, like finding Robin Hood in a game of hide-and-seek, or storming the castle and shooting down the bad guys.

This book is both fun and educational at the same time. Kids will love the interactive pages and won’t even notice that they are learning lessons in grammar.

What I liked: My favorite thing to do was change the language settings and hear words in French, Spanish, German and others. The interactive pages always had a nice surprise, too. Tap around on the splash pages to see what secrets can be revealed.

What I didn’t like: The word pronunciation feature was not very responsive. I had to tap a word multiple times before it would work. The menu page is inconvenient. There is no way to quickly switch between features, like languages or age-appropriate learning tools. It would be nice to see a menu that doesn’t take you back to the beginning of the app every time.

To buy or not to buy: This is a great book to add to your children’s reading library. The HD-quality app is only $3.99, a bargain for the amount of entertainment and education it has to offer.
