WSJ Writes about Apple’s Assault on TV

Apple TVAccording to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is moving forward with their “assault on television.” Senior ranking Apple executives, including Senior Vice President Eddy Cue, have done more than hint toward something new that should serve to redefine television as we know it. This news has left many onlookers more than a little confused when Jobs himself has been quoted saying it wouldn’t be wise to get into the business of making TV’s.
I suspect that Jobs was giving us all a hint. I believe he was saying that he doesn’t want to compete with current television manufacturers which means that whatever Apple delivers will be different. This makes perfect sense and falls well within the Apple mantra: let the experts be experts. Other companies are doing very well delivering the same-old-same-old style screens with massive dimensions so Apple should focus on their core strengths: personalization and user-interface.
There are realities we can’t ignore. The face of entertainment is changing. Once upon a time every family wanted the biggest television they could afford and it dominated their living room and was a place where people fought over the remote. Flash forward to a time where everybody in the family has their own smartphone and/or tablet and it’s a whole new game. Suddenly a 10″ screen is enough because it’s in the palms of our hands, though the lucky few of us with dual monitor configurations on our desks may also like to be able to use one of those for television viewing now and then. Oh, and I want it to be the same television experience whether I start watching it at work, continue on the subway and finish that same program or movie as I wind down at home.
Speculation galore already exists as to what Apple has planned though we know to date there hasn’t been any real movement with regards to new licensing agreements or responses to competitors like Google and Microsoft as they launch their own television services.
Now consider that the best prediction of future behavior can be made based on past behavior. Apple has a history of building on their existing infrastructure. With an arsenal of monitors already being made and a selection of devices with beautiful displays already available it seems entirely more likely that the threatened assault will come in the form of a philosophy that is supported by software. Apple loves wireless. Apple loves syncing across multiple devices. Apple loves a consistent user interface. Let’s start our speculations there.
