Nintendo Wii still going strong, sales records smashed

Nintendo Wii still going strong, sales records smashed. Gaming, Microsoft, Nintendo, Wii, Xbox 360 0

The seventh generation consoles, in tech terms, are pretty ancient. The Xbox 360 landed almost seven years ago to the day - around the same time as Motorola began offering the RAZR V3i handset in gold, and Mozilla went live with Firefox 1.5 - and when the Wii was launched a year later, the iPhone was a just a hopeful dream of fanboys everywhere.
But, along with the PS3, the consoles have survived the test of time and in Microsoft and Nintendo's case are still breaking records.
We've already told you how the week of Black Friday saw Microsoft shift 960,000 Xbox 360s, with 800,000 of those selling on the famous shopping day alone.
And, Nintendo was also breaking records of its own. Despite almost 90 million Wii consoles flying off the shelf since its launch at the end of 2006, the Japanese company still recorded its biggest ever Black Friday; selling 500,000 new consoles.
"We know that Black Friday and that entire week is a key selling week and it is important for products like ours to have a jump in momentum and we were fortunate to see that," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president.
"For us, it really was driven by unique and powerful software and what gives us confidence is that we still have more software to launch in the balance of this holiday period."
With the Wii U already teased, and the Xbox 720 also hotly tipped, it's clear that it is a booming time for the console industry.
