Let Your Imagination Run Wild in An Elephant in my Tree

An Elephant in my Tree is a charming story about exploration and imagination, featuring a young girl who fancies herself the queen of the tree that she plays in. This is no ordinary tree – in her mind, it’s an ocean of leaves as big as a country, and in it, anything is possible.
A knitting elephant becomes the girl’s friend. He teaches and guides her through a series of whimsical activities, from knitting to acrobatics, and more importantly, he teaches her the value of friendship.
This is a simple book, with uncomplicated illustrations and no animations, but that’s part of its charm. The message in the book is all about taking care of your friends, having fun, and believing in the impossible. In fact, the final lines read “If someone, while listening to this story, tells you they’ve never seen an elephant in a tree, it’s not because it doesn’t exist… it’s just because he is very well hidden.”
The narration of the story is clear and concise and it is complemented by original music. Narration is available in three languages – English, French, and Chinese. It can also be turned off so that parents and children can read the story on their own. Hand-drawn illustrations draw the reader into the story, making the book fun to read again and again.
An Elephant in my Tree is the perfect book for creative children with active imaginations. This story tells children that it’s okay to dream, even when the people around them don’t see the world in the same way, which is a great message for a young dreamer.

What I liked: The music and the illustration of the book worked well together. I liked the haphazard art style and the illustrations of the duo’s silly activities. The main character – the little girl – is relatable to any child who has ever made up a story, so kids are sure to love her and her elephant friend. This app bills itself as a way for children to learn to appreciate different languages at an early age, which is an interesting take. It’s certainly nice to have the option to read the story in multiple languages.
What I didn’t like: The story ends abruptly, with the elephant simply disappearing one day. As an adult, I can see the ending as a metaphor for growing up, but children are sure to wonder where the elephant went and why he left.
To buy or not to buy: This is a solid story with good characterization and an encouraging message that kids are sure to love. I will say that it is slightly overpriced compared to other apps in the genre with similar content, but if you have a child that may be interested in this type of story, it’s well worth the purchase.
