Xenocube HD – More than a Puzzle Game for iPad

I am a huge fan of puzzle games, and Xenocube HD did not disappoint on any front. With several game modes, including a very cool augmented reality (iPad2 only) gameplay mode, Xenocube is a fun and addicting puzzler.
Although the gameplay is not particularly difficult, the vibrant color scheme keeps players interested and engaged the whole time. Each game mode has a different challenge to overcome, whether it be time, score, or energy.
The basis for the game is simple, match three like colors in a row to delete them. If one of the squares up for deletion has a certain design on it, it is a power-up usually consisting of some major point boosts.
Xenocube however is more than your average Bejeweled knockoff. It incorporates the 3D figure of the cube (don’t worry, it’s not a Rubik’s Cube). Since the cube does have edges, players are able to match colors around corners and across faces. Remember that if you run out of matches on one face, there are always 5 more!
Now, to the augmented reality mode. This is only available for the iPad 2, and those who are able to play will certainly start to feel bad for those who cannot. Augmented reality is a work in progress, but in this instance it works seamlessly. All you have to do to play in any setting is print out a small card from the website and you’re ready to play.
When you come to the main menu, you’ll notice a slider on the right with a 3D at the top. This adjusts the amount of tilt control players have during gameplay. If you’re going to be playing with your iPad set down on a table, you’ll want the slider all the way down but if you plan on playing with it in your hands, turn it up!
When a game finally ends, the app includes the option to post your score to Facebook so you can compete with all your friends (or just brag!).
What I liked: The functionality of the augmented reality was perfect, and not to mention so cool! Ease of gameplay combined with addicting graphics made for a great experience. I honestly cannot stop playing.
What I didn’t like: Zen and Eye of Ra mode are almost the same thing, maybe combine them and add a new way to play instead. The only downside to the augmented reality is that you have to carry the print out card around with you, but that solution will come with time.
To buy or not to buy: Augmented reality is the way of the future, and this game grabs the reins and leads the way. If you’re into puzzle games and want to check out a good example of augmented reality then this is the app for you.
