Discover Beauty and Art in Auryn – Van Gogh and the Sunflowers – iPad App Review

Auryn – Van Gogh and the SunflowersAuryn – Van Gogh and the Sunflowers is a lovely app based on the popular book by Laurence Anholt that is intended to be an “inspiring introduction” to the artist, Vincent van Gogh.
You might feel like you’ve seen a lot of interactive storybooks for your iPad, but I guarantee this one will blow your mind.

The story is quaint and the watercolor graphics are really beautiful but the magic of this app is in the interactive content. In one instance, the child in the story is running through a field (you can actually watch the animation of her running on the screen) and you can choose to re-color her (with the app restricting the color so it does not bleed outside of the lines, making it very easy for young children to do a nice job). Once you do, the colored-by-your-child artwork is inserted into the book in place of the original graphic. This can be done time and again throughout the book.
Another mini-game for each animated character lets you view and learn about the mechanics behind what makes them move. If you touch the ‘machine’ it will collapse into a series of pieces that need to be assembled like a puzzle within the given time period. If you beat the clock, content is unlocked!
I love that when the story is being read, the corresponding word in the shown text is highlighted. I think this serves to help older children learn reading skills but gives the younger ones a chance to learn how words and sentences flow together visually and lets them know where on the page the narrator is currently located.

What I liked: There is beauty on the surface of this app but there are many layers that can be peeled back to reveal more interactive and valuable content as you interact with it.
What I didn’t like: The only thing I can find to complain about is that turning the pages can sometimes be a bit tricky. It seems like I was turning them by accident when I tried to play with the interactive content and then the next time I couldn’t get the page to turn at all without a bit of a fight. Touching the space at the very bottom of the screen brings up a flip-book of all the pages in the book which lets you progress through them as well which helps.
To buy or not to buy: I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this app. I believe children should be exposed to beauty and art the goes beyond the computer animated-style graphics they are growing used to (not that I don’t enjoy those as well).
