Apple Adds More Taiwanese Component Suppliers For iPhone 5 – Report

Looking for further evidence that the iPhone 5 is on its way? You’re in luck!
DIGITIMES’ Willie Teng reports that Apple has added Foxconn Electronics, Foxlink, Gold Circuit Electronics (GCE) and Epistar as component suppliers for the iPhone 5, more evidence that development of the next generation of Apple’s iconic smartphone is proceeding toward a product release later this year.
While this is great news for iPhone 5 hopefuls, don’t get your hopes up for a Spring iPhone 5 release.
Teng expects the iPhone 5 will not launch until summer at the earliest, based on a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report. And that sounds about right, since there are rumors of the iPad 2 launch anticipated in March or April and probably a round of MacBook Pro updates as well coming up that should keep Apple’s dance card full for the near future.
More Component Suppliers Means More iPhones On the Way
Teng says the EDN report notes that longtime Taiwan-based (also with manufacturing facilities on the Chinese mainland) Apple subcontractor Foxconn will become the new earphone supplier, and Foxlink will produce earphone jack sockets for the iPhone 5. Japan’s Foster was the previous supplier, but the strengthening yen has reportedly impelled Apple to look for a more cost-advantageous sources.
Taiwan-based GCE as a supplier will help ease a shortage of HDI boards, but Apple will also continue to source boards from Compeq Manufacturing and Unimicron Technology — both of Taiwan — and Epistar Corp., Taiwan’s largest manufacturer of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), could also enter Apple’s supply chain thanks to the company’s forming a strategic alliance with Japanese auto parts and LED specialist Toyoda Gosei. Teng reports that Apple could previously source only from Japanese suppliers due to patent issues according to industry sources, but that Epistar will now have access to Toyoda Gosei technologies.
The addition of more component suppliers should help avoid the sort of sourcing slowdowns that have been encountered by Apple with the hot-selling iPad. In short, this means that Apple is gathering all the components it needs to release the iPad 2 and iPhone 5 within the year.
