Ring Fling owes a ton to
Air Hockey, the game that’s
taken over many a family vacation. For that reason alone, it makes for a
great party game as well as a quite satisfying single player title.
Like Air Hockey,
players take opposing sides and must fling rings at each other. These
rings are just the facilitators to victory, however, with the shapes
being used to direct a star shaped object at the opponent. Fling that
star based puck across the opponent’s goal and gain a point. First one
to reach 10 points wins the game.
It’s simple stuff but great fun. Amongst friends, it makes for an
immensely frantic yet enjoyable time. Matches never take long to
complete but the urge to keep playing is consistently there. It’s
possible to play with between 1 and 4 players, with a corner assigned to
each player for ease of use. Variety comes in the form of different
modifiers that can be unlocked and offer benefits for the rings. Some
will make the rings huge while others make them faster. Holding a finger
down charges the ring up, gradually making it bigger and harder
hitting. The pucks come in two forms – either one large shape or three,
smaller stars, each invoking different subtle strategical requirements.
It’s annoying that other options are a little limited such as the
inability to adjust how many points are required to win a match, but
what is there is a fun and challenging game, whether played alone or
with friends. It would have been nice to see more modifiers, also. Minor
problems aside and Ring Fling is a much more exciting game than
its gaudy neon exterior suggests. Amongst friends, it’s quite unrivalled
in the fun it offers.
