Do you like this story?
Equal parts skill and creativity, woodworking is one of those things that can be every bit as much a professional as a hobby. This means there is room for every skill level and all manners of style and customization.
This is where the new Woodcraft app comes in, allowing you to not only design your next woodworking project but also create a bill of materials, plan for the tools you will need to use and visualize your project as well as carry it through to the finished product.
As I used this app I could see the value easily as it takes you through every step of the project from design to completion, but I also got to thinking: this would be a marvelous app for those of us who have ideas but lack the skill to actually execute them. I once had a custom shelving unit constructed for me with a series of drawers and cubby holes and it would have been marvelous to be able to sketch out my design idea in this app and pass it along to the fellow who actually knew what he was doing to complete and take it that step further that he would have needed to plan supplies and measurements, etc.
This developed clearly understands that the iPad is capable of being a tool instead of just a waiting room companion and time sink (not that I don’t also love those games and apps as well).
What I liked: I love that you can share your projects in a booklet with fellow woodworkers or send specific designs via email or AirPrint so that you can share them with the people you are working for or with.
What I didn’t like: I wish there was more opportunity to customize the look of the finished project with paint colors or other decor style items.
To buy or not to buy: Woodcraft is the measure twice, cut once ap of apps and could be a very valuable resource for anybody with an interest in woodworking.
