Want a Challenge? Try Defense Zone HD for iPad

Defense Zone HD is a standard tower defense game with a steep difficulty curve and no bells and whistles. The goal is to build turrets to prevent enemy soldiers, tanks, and aircraft from crossing your borders.
When starting the game, you will only have access to a couple of turrets, but as it progresses, more will unlock. In total, there are six kinds of turrets, all designed to perform different defensive functions from slowing units to stopping air raids.
Each weapon has a different firing speed, range, and blast radius, and in this game, the weapons you choose and where you place them are of the utmost importance. You often must decide between upgrading existing turrets or building new ones, and one wrong mistake can lead to disaster, causing you to have to restart the level. Playing smart and figuring out the best combination is the way to win.
The graphics are decent, but vanilla. Turrets and some of the terrain look a lot better than units, and while you can zoom in to take a closer look at the action, it’s a mostly useless function since viewing the entire field tends to be important in a tower defense game.
Defense Zone HD was recently tweaked for difficulty after player complaints about some of the levels, but in my opinion, it’s still ranging on the overly hard side, even in easy mode. I’m no slouch at TD strategy and I found this game to be a lot more difficult than your typical tower defense. For that reason, this is a tower defense game that’s really only suitable for seasoned players, or players with a lot of patience.
That said, there’s nothing wrong with a harder game, it just excludes a portion of potential players. There are certainly serious gamers who will get a lot of enjoyment out of this game, especially those who want a challenge without all the fancy additions of a lot of other tower defense games available.
What I liked: I don’t mind a challenge, and it’s nice to see a game that can really test my strategic capabilities (though again, I think it’s still on the hard side).
What I didn’t like: I think that I’ve played a good portion of the defense games available in the App Store (and on the computer before the App Store existed), and while I appreciated that the developer was going for a straight no-frills TD game, it just wasn’t enough for me. There was nothing to draw me in, to engage me, or to keep me playing. It was just more of the same stuff that I’ve seen many times before. At the very least, it needs a story. It was also a short game, with only ten levels. There’s Open Feint support, but Game Center would be great too.
To buy or not to buy: I know there are a lot of enthusiastic tower defense fans out there, who really enjoy a challenge, and I think those types will want to give this game a try. I’d suggest trying the lite version to get a feel for the content and the difficulty.
