OmniVision Releases New 720p Cam Sensor – Will it be on the iPad 3?

Being one of those to trade in the first generation iPad for the iPad 2, it was a bit of a disappointment to discover the less-than-stellar quality of the back-facing camera.

Rumors of the third generation iPad include improvements to the quality of the camera and OmniVision just might be the company to make that happen.
The technology company recently announced a new 720p camera sensor that will help reduce the size of camera equipped mobile devices. The company has not said who will get this new technology, but Apple is one of its main partners.
An image sensor converts optical images to electronic signals. Mobile device makers are always looking for the smaller and better sensors to improve on their products. OmniVision’s newest product is a compact, high performance image sensor with 720p high definition video capture at 30 frames per second.
“This unprecedented combination of high performance and small form factor allows HD cameras to be integrated into ultra-slim, narrow-bezel devices, making it an attractive solution for next-generation smartphones, notebooks, tablets, portable gaming systems and other mobile devices.”
While it is probably too late for this new technology to make it into the upcoming iPad 3, there is a very good chance that it will make it into the next generation iPhone, and probably future Apple tablets. Although, just because OmniVision only announce the launch of this product today, doesn’t mean it didn’t make it into production of the next iPad model. They could have had a box, or ten thousand, sitting in their back room.
