Garmin Debuts BlueChart Mobile Marine App for iPad

Garmin International is announced the launch of their new BlueChart Mobile Marine iPad App in conjunction with the Miami International Boat Show this week. Designed with mariners in mind, this app offers boating enthusiasts the same feature rich and highly accurate BlueChart data that is currently found in Garmin’s popular marine chart plotters.

The app also features full access to ActiveCaptain, “a web-based community that provides real-time content generated by mariners for mariners.” This service is very valuable as it provides a venue for posting as well as referencing non-commercial reviews, local knowledge, anchorages and hazard reports.
Users of BlueChart Mobile Marine will be able to plan and create routes, view shaded depth contours and inter-tidal zones with spot soundings, as well as search for a marine service point to find out the phone number, hours of operation, and information about amenities and services available. Additional features include advanced interaction with the charts themselves, including “utilizing the innovative new radial menu to mark waypoints, establish a destination for a route, and learn about the features on the chart.”
If you’re lucky enough to have WiFi at the dock or have an active Internet connection out in open water, the app will also provide you with real-time weather information –a feature very that could prove to be very valuable for those communing with the outdoors. If you happen to already own a Garmin chartplotter, this new app and your iPhone or iPad can extend the usefulness by offering the ability to wirelessly transfer routes, waypoints and tracks created with BlueChart Mobile to your existing networked hardware.
Equal parts safety and utility, this app serves to enrich and enhance your marine adventures. It is expected to be available in the App Store as a free download by the summer of 2012 (with maps available for purchase).
