There are multiple apps out there that help you discover great YouTube content, but none are quite as unique as Elicity. You see, Elicity doesn’t display videos at all on its main screen; Instead, the app uses a word cloud.
Instead of flicking through hundreds of videos, you explore YouTube using pinching, zooming, and scrolling on a word cloud that’s created from video keywords. When you see an interesting word, you can tap it to explore the word further and see related words, or you can tap the video results button to see videos associated with the word you’ve chosen.
For example, typing in “cats” displays all the keywords that are related to cat videos. The words that are used most often show up the biggest in the word cloud, and tapping another, related word will open up a search with both of the selected keywords, narrowing your choices down even further.
I was able to discover a slew of all new cat videos that I hadn’t seen before, using this keyword method of browsing. If you end up with too many words and want to backtrack, just tap the “X” next to a word to remove it. You can use pinch gestures to zoom in and out, so even tiny words are tappable.
When you find a word or concept that you like, you can tap the video button located on the bottom navigation bar. This takes you to 25 relevant videos, which you can scroll through and tap on to watch.
In the options menu, you can change the density, emphasis, font, and color scheme of the word cloud, and increase or decrease the search size. There are a lot of fun options, and hitting the paint icon gives you a random selection so you can explore all kinds of looks. Finally, and the most fun part, the gift icon will show you a random search, which I played with quite a bit, checking out all kinds of different videos I wouldn’t have thought to search for on my own.
I’m a sucker for word clouds, so I thought this was a fun new way to explore videos, and it was a refreshing change from all the typical video apps. If you’re a word enthusiast, and you’re looking for a new way to check out videos, I’d suggest giving this app a try.
What I liked: Visually, this app is appealing, with all of the different layouts and color choices. I like the idea behind it – it’s creative, innovative, and different.
What I didn’t like: This app is obviously more for browsing than for seeking something specific, and I’m not sure that it’s going to appeal to everyone. I’m also thinking that it may be priced just a bit high, since there are so many apps that allow us to search YouTube, including the one that comes with our iPads.
To buy or not to buy: If you’ve got a bit of spare change and you love watching videos, I’d suggest this app. It’s a great way to browse and discover new content.
