AT&T’s New LTE Micro-SIMs a Sign of iPad 3 and iPhone 5?

Mobile phone blog site PhoneArena recently reported learning that AT&T will be receiving LTE-enabled micro-SIM cards which may or may not be intended for the future iPad 3 and iPhone 5.

Phone Arena mentions that the information that was “slipped under their door” did not say which model of device was supposed to receive the new LTE-enabled cards, but made sure to mention that the iPhone 4S uses micro-SIM cards and the next generation model is likely to use the same cards. “Unless Apple decides to jump straight to nano-SIM cards, that is.”

An internal memo to employees states,

To keep your micro sim inventory up to date, scrap all old micro sims [word scrambled] but keep all new micro sims labeled with same sku. You will then be sent the new ‘LTE’ compatible sim.”

The site points out that Nokia’s Lumia 900, which is expected to launch March 18 will be using AT&T’s 4G LTE network and it is more likely that the flood of micro-SIM cards are meant for that model since the iPhone 5 is not expected to be announced until the World Wide Developer Conference in June. However, rumors of the third generation iPad, which may be announced as soon as the first week of March, are saying that Apple’s newest tablet will definitely be sporting 4G LTE support, so who knows?
