Today in China is the
Lantern Festival, the traditional end of the 15-day long Chinese New Year celebrations, although most people actually went back to work at the start of last week. And so many search engines have festive doodles depicting lanterns, or perhaps even the ‘
tang yuan’ sticky rice dessert that many will eat tonight.
Here are eight cute Lantern Festival doodles from both Chinese and overseas search engines. They’re in no particular order, though I’ve saved my personal favourite for last:
The whole Google.com (NASDAQ:GOOG) domain is now showing this assortment of glowing lanterns, pictured above, with the illumination spelling out the company’s name.
China’s most popular search engine, Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU), has an animated doodle, with decorative papercuts spinning around.
Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Bing always has large background images on its search page, but still it’s nice to see a Lantern-themed one for today’s festival.
Soso.com, which is run by Tencent (HKG:0700), has gone for the most cutesy doodle, with a kid riding a paper dragon. It’s a reference to the dragon boats, bedecked with lights and lanterns, that will parade along many rivers and lakes across China tonight.
The Sohu (NASDAQ:SOHU) owned Sogou search engine has crammed in both a mythical and a dancing dragon. And, on the site, it’s animated in a basic ‘.gif’ kind of way. By some metrics, Sogou.com looks to have passed Google in terms of user-ship, and is now in second place in China.
State-owned search engine Jike has kept its geometric logo in shape, but tweaked the colours and added in a bowl of the afore-mentioned tang yuan that many Chinese will eat after dinner this evening. But two other minor search engines which are also state-owned, Panguso and CCTV Search, are being miserable and haven’t bothered to create any doodle for today. I’m not sure if they’ve ever done so before.
Before looking at my favourite doodle of the day, here’s a terribly lazy effort from Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO), showing fireworks and… erm… that’s all.
Lastly, here’s a very nice, painterly doodle from Youdao, the search engine operation from Netease (NASDAQ:NTES). I like the way the traditional ink drawing contrasts with the bright red lanterns, and it works well as a full-size image across the whole page.
