Sail Your Ships to Safety in The Lighthouse HD

The Lighthouse HD is a unique take on the line-drawing genre, with an amazing combination of ships, time management, collision avoidance, and sea monsters. It’s uniqueness and it’s fantastic graphics make this game a delight to play.
The goal of The Lighthouse HD is to use the lighthouse to guide your ships (in a variety of sizes) through dangerous waters, wrought with obstacles like ship-tearing rocks, giant man-eating kraken, vicious sharks, competing ships and eerie fog.
Drag and tap gestures are used to guide your ships, and flares and buoys will also help you out along the perilous routes. Hold a finger to the light on the screen and keep it right in front of the ship to navigate. Keeping to the shipping lanes will earn you points (the glowing pathway in the water), and collecting crates along the way will net you even more points. Buoys are used to block obstacles like rocks, and when one is placed, the ship will avoid it.
I am not typically a fan of line-drawing games, like Flight Control and Harbor Master, and The Lighthouse took awhile to grow on me too. I thought the initial gameplay was too slow, and the controls were not particularly easy to get used to, and quite a few ships met their demise at my fingertips.

After a few levels, the difficulty ramped up and I was comfortable with the touch and drag control scheme with all of the different sized ships, which made the game more engaging. By the way, the bigger the ship, the harder it is to steer.
Each level has a different mission. In one, I collected five life rafts, and in another, I had to guide five ships to safety, and they didn’t come one at a time, which turned out to be quite a challenge. I do wish, though, that there was a speed up button to make the ships sail faster towards the end when they don’t need as much micromanaging.
Every level has something that’s a bit different, and I did end up enjoying this game. It’s a great spin on a classic genre that’s a bit overdone, so it was nice to see something fresh.
In all, there are 10 ships to master, seven types of hazards to avoid, and three mission scenarios, plus achievements to earn and leader boards to top, for those of you competitive types. If you’re looking for a game that’s unique and challenging, you won’t go wrong with The Lighthouse HD.
What I liked: The graphics and the music combine to create a fantastic game atmosphere. Who knew guiding ships around obstacles could be such a challenge? I loved those kraken.

What I didn’t like: This game is a bit pricy, at $4.99 for 30 levels. The developer plans on adding content throughout 2012, and I’m hoping the majority of that will be free updates for customers who spent $4.99.

To buy or not to buy: This is a good game, but honestly, I don’t think it’s priced competitively. While I do recommend buying this, especially if you’re a fan of other line-drawing games, I might wait for a sale before purchasing.
