Obama Campaign Begins Accepting Mobile Payments with iOS Device using Square

The Obama reelection campaign has been making use of mobile technology. Voters can get tweets from the campaign trail by following @Obama2012 on Twitter, the organization recently joined the social media phenomenon Instagram, where voters can see images from the President’s campaign trail by following @barackobama.

Today, TechCrunch has reported that the Obama reelection campaign has incorporated mobile purchasing service Square to its list of mobile technology.

According to TechCrunch, Staff, fundraisers and others are being equipped with Square’s card reading device, which will allow the campaign to take donations with their smart phones and tablets.

“Whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, running for president or local assembly, Square makes it easier than ever for candidates, organizations and volunteers to fundraise for their cause,” said a spokesperson for Square.

The convenience of using Square is helpful to campaign staff and donators alike. If a person wants to support the Obama reelection campaign, there is no longer a need to have cash on hand or a checkbook nearby. Campaign staffers don’t have to worry about making sure they have kept track of hand-written receipts. With just a swipe, the donation will be processed and an email or SMS can be sent to the payee with a copy of the receipt.

There is a special app that is currently being used by the Obama campaign. However, the app will be made available to the general public soon. It will allow voters to donate directly to the campaign right from their smart phone or tablet.

It is clear that mobile technology is having a significant effect on society when your president is utilizing services like Square on the campaign trail.
