iPad 3 Production at Full Steam: Millions of Retina Displays Already Shipped with More to Come

Sharp and LG Display, Apple’s suppliers for its new 2048×1536 iPad 3 panels, have already started to ship millions of the high-resolution displays, which they began work on in the fourth quarter of 2011.
According to Digitimes’ sources, Apple suppliers will ship six to seven million panels in the first quarter of 2012, and 10 million units in the third quarter.
By the second quarter of 2012, iPad 3 component production will outpace the iPad 2, with Apple adjusting its iPad 2 panel shipments from 16 million panels in the third quarter of 2011 to 10 million in the fourth quarter, and dropping even further to seven or eight million units during the first quarter of 2012.
In other words, Apple is slowly decreasing the production of its iPad 2, while ramping up production of the iPad 3. Ultimately, this will result in 25 million iPad 2s in 2012, compared to 40 million in 2011. Apple is expected to produce 40 million panels for the next generation iPad during the course of 2012.
The iPad 3, which is rumored to have an upgraded retina display screen as well as a faster processor, is expected to be released in March of 2012.
