FilmOn Brings Network Television to the iPad, Smartphones, Computers

Internet based Virtual Cable TV Service FilmOn Labs (FilmOn.com) has just announced that, beginning in February, the company will be shipping FilmOn AIR for free to its yearly US based subscribers. This dongle will allow users to watch local network television on their iPads and other mobile devices.

FilmOn.com is the first Web based source for watching live television across mobile devices and computers.

The company offers a monthly subscription for access to streaming television channels such as NASA HD, Al Jazeera, TBN, and a multitude of sports channels. One aspect of live television that the company has had trouble offering to its subscribers is the ability to stream local broadcast channels to their mobile device. From the company’s press release:

“In 2010 FilmOn ended up in an ongoing legal battle with all four of the Major Networks CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX, over FilmOn’s right to carry their signals over the Internet. The case is ongoing and FilmOn expects to settle the dispute this year,” said Alki David, CEO and Founder of FilmOn.

To solve this issue and work with networks on their traditional business models, the company will be shipping FilmOn AIR in February. This device attaches to the users mobile phone, tablet or computer and tunes into ATSC digital signals that are being transmitted by local broadcasters.

FilmOn AIR is free with an annual US subscription of $149.95 for the basic package. The device retails for $95.95 and will allow users to watch, and even record, shows from FilmOn’s more than 120 online channels available with the company’s app.

The device plugs right into the user’s smart phone or tablet and comes with an internal battery that works for up to five hours of use.
