Apple Plans to Hide its Inventions via Fake Products

Adam Lashinsky Apple is well known for being one of the most secretive companies on the planet, so when somebody from the inside starts talking we are all ears trying to get the proverbial glimpse of something, anything. In his recent book, Inside Apple, Adam Lashinsky has a lot to say.
One of the more interesting tidbits is the revelation that the interview to be an engineer at Apple is actually an ongoing process that continues even once you start drawing a paycheck. This insinuation was confirmed by a fellow engineer who said, “A friend of mine who’s a senior engineer at Apple, he works on — or did work on — fake products I’m sure for the first part of his career, and interviewed for 9 months. It’s intense.”
Lashinsky had many things to say about Apple in his book, but the overwhelming theme was that workers there are ego-less drones working together to achieve “the greater good and glory of Apple.”
One question that I haven’t heard answered yet is whether people feel Cook can maintain the cloak of secrecy put in place by Steve Jobs? Will it hurt Apple if they loose some of the mystery and intrigue behind new product developments? Lashinsky had nothing but praise for the new CEO, stating that he felt he had the charisma for a job even more important than the leader of Apple –that he would also be a good fit as the leader of the free world as the President of the United States.
How would you feel if you discovered that the work you had been doing for most of the previous year was nothing more than a test of your loyalty? Would you understand and be appreciative of the opportunity or be resentful? I actually wonder if this kind of behavior doesn’t breed a certain brand of paranoia among Apple engineers. I am on the fence with my personal opinion, teetering between thinking it’s hilarious and cool while being annoyed at the waste of talent and deception.
