Rumor: Will the iPad 3 Be Thicker?

Speculation about the iPad 3 abounds across the Internet. Today’s rumor comes to us courtesy of Macotakara, a Japanese tech blog, which reports that although the next generation tablet will sport the same dimensions as the current iPad 2, it will be thicker.
According to Macotakara (with a little help from Google Translate), Apple’s Smart Cover will still be compatible with the iPad 3:

According to Asian supplier which provides part for next iPad, next iPad has same size of screen, but case may be thicker by unknown reason. Current iPad cases, which covers backside, will not be compatible with thicker next iPad.
Also the source told, front rounding corner will be same with current iPad, then Smart Cover will be good companion with new iPad.

There could be any number of reasons why the iPad 3 could be thicker. Maybe it’s because the iPad 3 will sport a 3D display. If the iPad 3 is indeed thicker, there must be a reason for it since Apple wouldn’t increase the tablet’s bulk unnecessarily.
