iPad 2 vs. Kindle Fire: Which One for Christmas?

PresentUnless you are living under a rock somewhere out there, chances are good that you fall into one of two categories: somebody who owns a tablet or somebody who wants to own a tablet. The part that is less certain is exactly which tablet.
If the news reports and statistics are to be believed, the tablet version of the ‘us vs. them’ fight is being waged between Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Apple’s iPad 2. Certainly there are other options available to you, but those seem to be the front-runner devices being seen at the tops of Christmas wish lists this year.
So accepting that, let’s get down to brass tacks.

Apple iPad 2

Pro: Wirelessly and effortlessly compatible and in-sync with all other Apple devices, consistent and usability friendly user interface, considerable App Store inventory to suit your needs and interests, 9.7″ screen is closer to a laptop-replacement for the most commonly executed tasks, strict rules and regulations enforced by Apple means apps tend to be stable and more reliable than on other platforms, dual cameras, Bluetooth connectivity for accessing peripherals, 3G is available, tethering is built-in for those who also have iPhones
Con: Higher price tag than many tablets, lack of SD card means on-board storage can only be extended via cloud computing which doesn’t apply to apps themselves, larger form factor compared to 7″ tablets may be seen as less portable, strict rules and regulations enforced by Apple means less developer freedom

Amazon Kindle Fire

Pro: Very affordable, 7″ screen means a small device that is very portable, full brand integration with Amazon that features an established and considerable library of available books and media, support for USB devices including those offering additional storage
Con: Operating system is not a full installation of Android so some functionality is absent and upgrades may be more complicated, not all Android apps are compatible, 7″ screen has been criticized as being too small to be usable for meaningful web browsing, touch-screen interface has been described as not being as responsible as it should be, no 3G option for Internet connectivity in areas where WiFi is not available, no Bluetooth, no camera
In the end it comes down to personal preference and gut feeling. Both tablets are exceptional choices and class leaders. The iPad 2 is a joy to use and a beautiful tablet while the Kindle Fire is an excellent compromise for those wanting basic tablet functionality with a much smaller investment.
