Game of the Month, November 2011: Epoch

The good times keep on rolling on the App Store. Even though November was a relatively slow month for great iOS games, we still awarded our share of Must Have scores. The best and the brightest this month were Monster Burner, Major Mayhem, Poker Pals, Epoch, Aquaria, and Penny Parlor. But there can only be one Game of the Month, and this month the choice was clear: It's Epoch, the stylish shooter from Uppercut Games.
Built on the beastly Unreal Engine 3, Epoch uses beautiful graphics to depict a post-apocalyptic world where the only things moving are battle robots. But graphics are nothing without gameplay, and that's where Epoch really shines. Uppercut Games has delivered a stylish, original shooter, starring a nimble, lovable robot that's armed to the teeth. Using taps and swipes, you make him leap behind cover and pop up to shoot at a wide array of mechanical enemies.
But fast-paced action is only part of the reason Epoch is a killer game. The developers took a page from Infinity Blade by letting you customize your character between battle. You can buy guns with more firepower, grenades, missiles and an array of power-ups to make taking out the robot hordes all the more fun.
Our runner-up for Game of the Month is the iPad-only title Aquaria by Bit Blot. It may have been ported from the PC, but Aquaria feels totally at home on the iPad. It's a gorgeous adventure game based on the tried-and-true Metroidvania design. You start off with only a few abilities, but as you progress you gain new ones that let you access more of the underwater game world. If you have an iPad, Aquaria is a solid purchase.
Congratulations to Uppercut Games and Bit Blot for creating two of the best games this month!
