Dr. Seuss Band: It’s Rock Band for the Pre-school Set – iPad App Review

Oceanhouse Media has established itself as the iDevice source for all things Seussical. After releasing countless versions of Dr. Seuss’ beloved tales as kids book apps, including the long lost Bippolo Seed, the developer has expanded its offerings with a new, universal music making app, Dr. Seuss Band.
Dr. Seuss Band stands out among the crowded field of kids’ edu-apps. While the game play is similar to big kid favorites such as Rock Band or the Tapulous family of games, the UI is fully imbued with Dr. Seuss’ playful humor and sense of absurdity.

The app opens with interactive instructions that help the user learn to tap the colored buttons to play music, swipe parts of the horn up and down to change them, and tap the menu bar at the top to select a song.
Gameplay will be familiar to anyone who has played similar music-based tapping games. Simply press down the key that corresponds to the colored bar as it reaches the key, and hold it for the proper duration.

Users can play in game mode or free play. Tackle each of the 10 included songs at three difficulty levels: easy, medium, and hard. The hard level is challenging, since the notes move faster and it involves changing octaves, but it will give kids (or adults) a goal to work toward. Dr. Seuss Band is Game Center enabled.
The player can fun add effects — the game includes an echo chamber or the default “normal” setting — by swapping out the center section of the instrument. Add final effects, such as the included vibrato, by changing the last section. It’s also possible to change the octave of the keys by tapping the black or silver arrows on the sides of the screen.
A certain score in game mode will unlock additional songs, instruments and effects in lieu of purchasing them.
Download Dr. Seuss Band from the App Store for $0.99. It costs $7.99 to unlock all of the game’s content and $3.99 to unlock all of the songs.
What I liked: I liked that the in-app content which is available for purchase could be earned. Unlike Rockband or Dance Dance Revolution, the app is designed so there is no grading or failure. There is also lots of positive feedback given during gameplay, which should help dampen player frustration.
What I didn’t like: The game may be too challenging for its target audience, and though free play is always an option, there is no way to unlock content through free play. Though I reviewed it on the iPad, I couldn’t imagine trying to play the songs quickly enough on an iPhone or iPod touch’s smaller screen.
To buy or not to buy: At the introductory price of $0.99, Dr. Seuss Band earns a place in the app library of every young family. Parents who are concerned about unauthorized in-app purchases may want to disable this feature through the iPad’s settings. An adult may be needed to unlock songs and instruments for younger children.
