Developer Interest in iPad Grows While iPhone Declines

Apple DevelopersIn the results of an app survey conducted by Strategy Analytics, it was shown that developers seem to favor working with tablets over smartphones with the iPad inching ahead over the once top-dog iPhone. If you consider that the iPad is still a relative newcomer to the consumer market, this makes sense.
Other results featured in the document may be more surprising. Windows phone development increased 167% drawing in 8% of the developer share increasing over their 3% from last year. Not as surprising is the decrease seen by RIM down to 1% from 5% with regards to BlackBerry development.
Josh Martin, Director of Apps Research at Strategy Analytics discusses the results of their survey, indicating that he feels the app market is maturing and facilitating a larger number of developers participating in the revenue sharing. He also explains that “we see strong interest in fresh, emerging platforms and new business models, such as virtual goods and in-app advertising over the next year. The platform that best delivers revenue from multiple streams stands the best chance of success in the next eighteen months. For this reason, Strategy Analytics predicts that Apple will introduce carrier billing in emerging markets next year, which will extend the lead it has built in mature regions.”
I think that summary loosely translates into: developers making apps for the iPad are making money.

These statistics should be even more interesting once we emerge from the holiday season and learn just how many tablets and smartphones were gifted this year. I would expect a serious surge in app purchases and downloads early in the new year as people move into their new devices.
For those of you that own smartphones as well as tablets, do you buy more apps for your tablet? Do you prefer to use apps on your tablet?
