Celebrate 75 Years of LIFE – iPad App Review

I was just having a conversation with my mother where we discussed how it was difficult to remember what we cooked for supper the night previous but that we could quite clearly recall where we were and what we were doing the moments we learned Elvis had died or Kennedy had been killed.

For seventy-five years, LIFE Magazine has been punctuating news stories and current events with perfectly framed photography. This app celebrates those accomplishments and allows you to re-live history with a digital-format coffee-table book unlike any other.

Started by TIME publisher Henry Luce, LIFE Magazine grew from being a weekly-publication to something much more special. Described as the “gold standard for photojournalism”, the images published each week shape more than how people see the world’s events… they shape how people feel about them.

The app itself comes with two modes: landscape (browse the iconic image gallery) or portrait (flip through the famous magazine covers). The remarkable thing is that you can stroll down memory lane by viewing photo galleries of celebrities and memorable moments even when the date of the photo out-reaches your age.

If you want to have a little fun, an in-app game lets you play editor –try and figure out which of the shots shown actually made the cut (which has the added benefit of letting you see extra never-before-seen images from some of your favorite stories and celebrities)!
What I liked: This app contains audio and video content that supplement and enrich the photographs in each of the galleries. It is really interesting to hear how a photographer was able to capture a particular shot or the reasons behind making a particular choice for the cover.

What I didn’t like: Flipping through the images is easy but it takes a little more playing-around and intuition to use the other browsing features that allow you to view the images by decade or different subject areas.

To buy or not to buy: The price of this app is a small price to pay for the guided tour down memory lane.
