Steam Wars HD

“Steam Wars HD” from developer Illogika is a turn-based robot battle game taking place on a spherical planetoid. It’s a cool little game, but the amount you enjoy it will directly correlate to how good you can get at it. Unfortunately, I kind of sucked…

The game lets two robots face off in short, fun battles. Each player takes a turn in which they may move or use a weapon, or a combination of both, depending on the amount of steam they have left. Various weapons and power-ups are available to find, as well as plenty of obstacles and walls to hide behind, adding to the strategy. The problem I had with the game is the aiming.

While technically it works, like I said, I just was not very good at figuring out the right angle, power and direction to shoot my weapons at. I’ve played 2d games like “Scorched Earth” before where you only have to worry about angle and power, and I’ve done well, but adding in the direction within the 3d space and top-down viewpoint really threw me off. I constantly found myself dropping bombs around my opponent, rarely making a hit.

With that said, however, I want to stress that I just wasn’t very good at this game, but it is definitely an enjoyable, well-polished strategy game. Give it some time and there is plenty to love. I’ll certainly be going back to try to sharpen my skills.
