Practice Fusion announces secure EMR app for iPad

Allows doctors, patients to access records easily

After previously toying with an access system that let doctor connect to Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) via LogMeIn Ignition, Practice Fusion has now created a native iPad app that it debuted earlier today at its annual conference, TechCrunch reports. The company scans medical records, creates EMRs and now allows them to be securely accessible to doctors even while out of the office for free, relying on in-app advertising of labs, pharma companies and others to create revenue.
Currently the company boasts over 130,000 physicians as clients, handling the records for over 25 million patients. The new app will allow doctors to view the day's appointments and call up records on each patient, including allergies, family history, current medications and recent progress. Users can get push notifications from the office, record patient dictations of their symptoms, and use pre-defined treatment plans as a template for their own assessment in order to minimize typing.

The app also promotes labs, pharmacies, drug and equipment companies who pay to advertise within the app, as it is often doctors who make specific recommendations about medications to be used and labs for testing. According to Practice Fusion, the average doctor in California directs around $2.3 million in patient or insurance spending. Overall, the company estimates that its client doctors direct over $40 billion per year via the Practice Fusion platform. The company has nearly doubled its client base over the course of 2011.

The company also plans to release APIs that let other devices -- such a glucose readers, weight scales and other devices -- send their data to Practice Fusion as well to add to a patient's chart. It also wants to expand patient access to the records -- and advertising -- as well, tying in services such as 100Plus, a health website that shows patients how healthy choices can increase their lifespan. The Practice Fusion EMR app will be available on the App Store soon, the company said. [via TechCrunch]
