New Developments on the Tablet Wars
Do you like this story?
Apart from being a genius innovator, Steve Jobs was a grand showman too, which was seen when he dramatically resigned as Apple’s CEO. A sense of showmanship was injected by him into each new product introduction; the same lines were followed with iPad 2. A new line of competition was added to the raging tablet wars prevalent.
The main contenders in this war against Apple are Motorola (Xoom tablet) and Galaxy Tab from Samsung.
Competitors find it difficult to compete with Apple, given their supreme features on their products as well as the drama involved. The iPad 2 maintained this charm, with cooler new features and a sleeker frame.
Thin is the buzzword. The iPad 2 is just .34 inches thick and weighs 1.3 pounds. The Xoom comes at 1.6 pounds whereas the Galaxy Tab weighs in 1.2 pounds at .4 inches.
The size of display, is it a deciding factor? Display sizes of 9.7 inches in iPad 2 and 10.1 inches in the other two competitors do not call for a great deal of product differentiation, as all of them are conveniently small but at the same time harge enough for ease in reading.
Is resolution decisive? Apple with a resolution of 1024×768, loses out to the Android powered models the Motorola Xoom as well as the Galaxy Tab from Samsung, which have resolutions nearly similar to laptops at 1280×800.
How much can you hold and at what speed do you operate? Capacity wise, the iPad 2 is the fastest as it has a 1GHz dual-core A5 processor with 32GB storage. Galaxy Tab and Xoom have respectively 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor/16/32GB storage and a NvidiaTegra 2 dual-core processor/32GB storage respectively.
The Memories are always dearer to all. Only the Motorola Xoom is equipped with expandable memory, hence would be the only answer to those who would be requiring storage of a large amount of data. The Samsung Galaxy Tab or the Apple’s iPad 2 have been outsmarted here by the makers from Motorola.
The war is indeed heating up, newer fighters are also making their entry into the scene, hence what we have discussed about could just be a minor battle and the greater war is yet to have started.
