After a somewhat quiet, dare we say disappointing year from the manufacturer in 2011, Apple’s key product lineup is set to receive a flurry of enormous and indeed overdue revamps in 2012, with the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 likely to be occupying the headlines across the board.
To give credit where due the products of 2011 were not without their charm to say the least, though the iPad 2 represented a mere evolution of the original rather than the expected revolution, while the iPhone 4S really did little to explain the near 18 months of silent development. Of course, this could have very well been the result of leadership issues in light of the tragic passing of Steve Jobs, but more probably it is simply technological and logistical issues that have kept Apple subdued.
Indeed, this would in fact be the very best news possible, as it would mean that what is on the horizon 2012 are some truly extraordinary releases.The iPad 3 is largely expected to arrive in the Spring, though there is some chatter of a possible fall release date, with an iPad 2S filling the void in March. Exactly how well this would go down with public would have been a mystery, though given the runaway success of the iPhone 4S, Apple will likely be on to a winner either way.

Apple’s iPod Touch 5 is also pegged for a 2012 release, though of course will not touch the ground until the iPhone 5 is well and truly in circulation. The fact that no new iPods came along in 2011 at all is perhaps the strongest evidence of all that an iPhone 5 release was planned, though held back by unforeseen issues and leading to the creation of the iPhone 4S.
Speaking of the iPhone 5 release date, with the iPad 3 expected March or perhaps the fall and the iPod 5 likely to land during September, this conveniently leaves something of a significant and suspicious gap around June/WWDC time…
