Cézanne album: The e-album of the exhibition Cézanne and Paris hosted in musée du Luxembourg, Sénat, Paris – iPad Digital Book App Review

French artist Paul Cézanne (1893-1906) was a revolutionary post-impressionist painter and considered the father of cubism by the likes of Picasso and Matisse. Cézanne album is a collection of his works that are currently on exhibit at musée du Luxembourg. Take a trip to France’s first public museum without ever having to leave the comfort of your couch.
Cézanne album, also called Cézanne and Paris, Album of the exhibition, is a 51-page digital book that follows the museum exhibit’s presentation, starting with the relationship between Cézanne and French writer Émile Zola (1840- 1902) and continuing with his Paris works, his still life paintings and the return to his home town of Provence. Each section of the museum’s exhibit gets its own chapter in the book. Each page includes images of paintings by Cézanne, as well as paintings by artists that the book compares to or somehow references. The images can be double-tapped to be highlighted in a gallery style design for closer viewing. One can also pinch-to-zoom for a more detailed examination of brush strokes and lines.

Each page can be bookmarked and annotated with a note-adding feature that can be referenced at any time using the menu bar. Pages can be viewed as thumbnails for quick reference and text can be zoomed in on with a double-tap. Each image is attributed and can be viewed in a separate window by tapping the attribution text once.
For fans of Cézanne, 19th century art, post-impressionism or art in general, this book is a great way to explore the life of one of the most important artists in French history. Although it is not a comprehensive biography of his entire existence, it represents Cézanne’s works thoroughly.

What I liked: One of Cézanne’s painting’s most distinguishing features are the complex brush strokes.  The image zoom feature allows the user to experience the artistry close up, as if you were standing two inches from the actual painting itself.
What I didn’t like: The content is a bit dry. It reads like a college textbook.
To buy or not to buy: Art students, collectors, and fans of Paul Cézanne will enjoy the beauty of this piece of history in the making.
