Apple Black Friday Sale: iPad sales up 68%

Apple Store
Apple doesn’t have many sales. When most people tell me they are waiting to buy an iPad or iPod or whatnot until they ‘go on sale’ I usually respond by saying they might be waiting quite a while. Black Friday has come to be the exception in the last few years, though one can never be certain exactly which products will feature a lower price and by how much. This year, iPads enjoyed a significant discount that was persuasive enough to bring sales up 68% over this same period last year.
Consumers saw nearly 10% off at the register (whether virtually from the Apple website or at a brick-and-mortar Apple store), with the prices on the iPad 2 down by USD $41-$61 depending on the model. It may not seem like a lot when you see the actual dollars up on the screen, but that means your Smart Cover or extra power adapter could be offset by the discount.
The increase in sales is likely due in part to the surge in popularity of tablets in general. People are starting to see the devices as functional and practical instead of frivolous toys.
And let’s not forget that a lot of the resulting post-sale profit has yet to be realized. More iPads in more consumer hands should translate into App Store profits that will be shared by Apple and their development community. Particularly at this time of year when so many people will be opening a gift to reveal their very first tablet… because we all know how app crazy we were in our first few days with the device. (and for some of us, that craziness doesn’t ever seem to end)
How many of you grabbed an Apple product while it was on sale? Did the sale motivate you to make a purchase you hadn’t otherwise intended on making? If you were already planning on an iPad purchase did you opt for a higher-capacity model given the lower cost?
